Diploma of Personal Injury Management |
The Diploma of Personal Injury Management builds technical knowledge and skills to provide quality workers compensation and personal injury management services.
It has been developed in consultation with industry and educational experts and is bench marked against the Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF), resulting in a quality–assured and nationally recognised qualification.

The Diploma comprises four compulsory modules covering information and details for all workers compensation schemes in all jurisdictions in Australia, including the self–insurance environment. These modules are:
Provides a snapshot of workers compensation and the different schemes operating in Australia. The module covers a history and overview of the political, social and economic landscape and examines current issues in workers compensation and stakeholder relationships. Students will learn the role of a claims and compensation claims officer, risk identification and underwriting concepts and occupational health and safety (OH&S).
Learning Outcomes:
- Outline the principles underlying the practice of workers compensation and occupational health and safety in Australia
- Differentiate between workers compensation schemes as they operate in Australia
- Describe the size, scale, trends and current issues of workers compensation in Australia
- Explain how workers compensation and occupational health and safety are linked
- Identify stakeholders and their roles, interests and expectations in an injury/illness event and the claims process
- Understand and identify risk as it relates to workers compensation at a national, scheme, industry,
underwriting and claims management level
- Analyse and develop personal and professional competence.

Looks at the relevant Acts that impact on workers compensation in each of the jurisdictions in Australia, and the key legal elements and compensation principles when establishing claims.
Students will learn how to maintain company records in claims management to assist in legal defence and the impact of the Privacy Act, Freedom of Information (FOI) Act and OH&S Act. This module will also examine the role of the supervisor in a workers compensation environment.

Provides an overview of the workers compensation/injury management claims handling process and identifies the milestones in this process, as well as regulatory obligations.
Students will learn OH&S and workers compensation legislative obligations around documentation requirements, procedural fairness and recoveries, injury notification and reporting. The module will also cover claim estimation, investigation processes, liability, payment entitlements and monitoring, reviewing and closing a claim file.

- Identify the milestones in the claims handling process
- Explain and apply regulatory requirements of the claims handling process
- Identify and apply the processes involved from incidence of injury to bringing a claim
- Communicate effectively with stakeholders at each stage of the claims process
- Identify and apply the processes involved in the initial investigation of a claim, determining liability and preparing an estimate
- Identify and apply the processes and procedures which follow the initial acceptance of a claim, including monitoring and review
- Effect the closure and archiving of a file in accordance with company and legislative requirements

FNSINSV514B Provide decisions on legal liability and indemnity of a claim.
Examines the role of the case manager and the case management process, the medical environment, the injury management process, and the return to work process. This module will provide an overview of case management techniques and the medical environment including, terminology, basic human anatomy, common injury types and typical duration of treatment.
Students will also learn about dispute resolution processes and negotiation skills, injury management and treatment plans, rehabilitation and return to work plans and rights and obligations of parties to workers compensation/injury management claims.

- Understand the role of the case manager in the injury management and return to work process
- Conceptualise the key components in the case management process, including the medical environment, the injury management process and the return to work process
- Display a knowledge of basic medical terminology and basic anatomy
- Explain injury types, typical duration and typical treatment regimes

- Develop appropriate injury management plans for injured workers
- Facilitate workplace assessments
- Identify potential limitations and barriers to the provision of services and utilise appropriate techniques to minimise their impact

- Educate injured workers on job search skills and techniques
- Negotiate effectively in the course of dispute resolution both internally and externally
- Understand the importance of customer service in effective dispute resolution.
