Early in his career Peter worked for NRMA, including stints as General Manager of NRMA Insurance Limited and 12 months as Acting CEO of the NRMA Group (1995), he then spent time at Zurich Australia Insurance (as CFO) and then at AMP General Insurance (as MD). He was CEO at GIO Australia following AMP’s initial takeover attempt in late 1998. He led GIO through 1999 – arguably one of the most difficult periods experienced by a large insurance company in recent decades – and successfully balanced the demands of a dominant 57% shareholder with the interests of 65,000 retail shareholders at a time when significant losses from a section of the business threatened GIO’s continued existence. In 2001 he moved to Trowbridge Consulting, now part of Deloitte, and shortly after was appointed Managing Director, returning to his great passion – working with customers – in a hands-on client serving role. His sudden death at age 46 was greeted with widespread shock and dismay. Former CEO of the NRMA Group, John Lamble, described him as “a born leader… a great communicator. Peter had an ability to put ideas simply, using words that could be understood from junior clerks to boards of directors. He displayed great leadership skills during the period he was CEO of NRMA, AMP General Insurance and then GIO. His straightforwardness helped him deal with some very difficult public situations.” John Trowbridge, founder and former chairman of Trowbridge Consulting and now an Executive Member of APRA said, “Peter had an enormous wealth of knowledge and understanding of the industry. “He was also a perceptive observer of, and participant in, the industry. His management style revealed a special talent; he was so approachable and open.”
