Blaise Roden-Paru, Senior Compliance Analyst, AIG PNG Limited

About Myself
My name is Blaise Roden Paru and I am 27 years old. I hail from Papua New Guinea and a small village called Waima in the Kairuku district of Central Province (one of 22 provinces) in Papua New Guinea.
I’m an Associate CIP with ANZIIF and Senior Compliance Analyst for AIG PNG. My role is demanding and requires me to ensure that the right systems and policies are in place to help manage and guide all facets of the business.

Why I decided to study
I first joined the insurance industry in 2009 as an Assistant Marine Underwriter for QBE Insurance where my immediate manager encouraged me to take up studies with The Institute. I trusted him because unlike me, he had 25 years experience and held ANZIIF Snr Associate membership. I guess he saw the potential in me even when I didn’t see it myself at the time. I was only 23, very young but very ambitious and eager to learn as much as I possibly could. I study my managers and over time, they became my role models and role models became mentors. I found one thing they all had in common was Associate/Snr Associate membership with The Institute. That’s when I realised that enrolling with The Institute would set me up for life and allow me to build on my knowledge and understanding of the ever adapting concept of insurance. In doing so, I was able to create a platform for my career to blossom from.

Cut a long story short – I enrolled with ANZIIF in 2010 and two years later attained my Associate CIP and as a result, won the 2012 ANZIIF Achievement Award for gaining the highest module mark in the module – Introduction to Underwriting.

What the award means to me
This award means a lot to me because it is measured against students in the Australasian region. Coming from a developing nation, my only hope is that other students in PNG can see what I’ve achieved with the Institute and realise that if you manage your time well, put in the extra effort, sacrifice a little bit of your free time, you can do it too. I owe this award to my humble parents, my mentors (Victor, Jerry, Mike and Bruce) and to the two people who first brought me into this industry - Nancye and Melissa. Thank you so much for bringing me along for the ride.

Advantages of online study
Studying online is as easy as saying “ab initio” – my favourite terminology in insurance.  Through the power of technology, you can access everything from the ANZIIF website. It’s all at your finger tips; online resources, online discussion forums, online articles etc.

Life after the Institute
I am currently enrolled with the Institute to complete my Snr Associate program. Once I complete that, I aim to undergo the Post Graduate program in Insurance and Risk Management with Deakin University.
